Welcome to our Reception Classes
Welcome to Saplings
We are a large and vibrant Reception Unit called Saplings. We consist of two classes: Acorn and Chestnut. We have a large 'double classroom' and an impressive and well equipped outdoor learning space.
Children typically start in a Reception class in the academic year that they turn five years old. This means that this birthday falls within the cycle from 1st September to the following 31st August.
Reception class is considered as the final year of EYFS. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers a child's development from birth through until the age of five. EYFS is focused on giving children the skills to properly prepare them for learning before they begin work within the National Curriculum. In Saplings, children learn through play, interspersed with short teaching inputs as a whole class and in small groups.
The seven areas of learning and development in EYFS are:
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language Development
- Literacy
- Mathematical Development
- Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Expressive Arts and Design
All children learn and develop at different rates. We believe that all areas of learning and development are equally important and interconnected.

Outside Learning
We have a very generous outdoor learning space.
Mud Kitchen with a view
A very popular area of our outdoor provision is the Mud Kitchen. Learning communication and social skills, developing fine and gross motor skills and being creative is messy work!
Brand New Resources
Our school's Sports Premium funding has helped to buy a number fo new scooters and bikes for our EYFS provision.
Child Initiated Writing
Reading for Pleasure
In the Early Years we promote a love for literacy with multiple opportunites for reading and story telling each day. We have quiet spaces for children to enjoy a book by themselves or with others.
Reading
Children enjoy choosing a book and sharing them in our inviting reading spaces. We encourage children to 'borrow' the books from our reading corners by taking them home to share and enjoy with their families.
Phonics
In Recpetion class we have daily teacher-led Phonics sessions.
