Working Together to Improve Attendance

The majority of students attend every school session throughout the academic year, yet overall attendance rates are not always as high as they should be. If young people are to achieve their potential, good attendance and punctuality are critical. The link between attendance and achievement is well documented. Irregular attendance has a significant impact on student achievement as they fall behind with their work and lose out on friendships. Parents have a legal duty to make sure that their child attends school regularly.

As a school we analyse & track attendance closely to ensure all students attend school regularly and meet our minimum expectation of 96% attendance. 

Parents and carers of pupils whose attendance falls below the school’s half-termly thresholds are invited to attend an Attendance Improvement Meeting with the school’s Head Teacher or a member of the leadership team.

The purpose of these meetings is to improve attendance. They allow everyone to share strategies which may help support improvements in attendance.

At the end of each meeting, everyone will have a clear plan for securing improved attendance.

We will also issue letters to parents and carers where attendance or punctuality has been identified as an area of concern. 

The head teacher cannot grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. To apply for term time leave, please complete the leave of absence request form that is available in the school office. 

The school will issue Fixed Penalty Notices in line with DfE guidance.
